KBC announces EUR 25 m expansion in Poland

Belgian banking giant KBC is planning to open 120 branches in Poland, Reuters reported on Thursday.

KBC, the owner of Hungary's K&H Bank, is to spend a total of EUR 25 million on expansion in Poland between 2006 and 2008.

The Group said that in the absence of large banks for sale, it was not planning further acquisitions in the region.

KBC said it is still interested in acquisitions in Poland and Slovakia, although there are no concrete plans at the moment.

Speaking at a press conference after the company released first half results, Andre Bergen, deputy chief executive, said: 'We are open to acquisitions in Poland... there are no concrete plans to buy in Slovakia but we are looking at some projects.'

Asked if the company can meet its target for 10 pct market share in Poland, Bergen said that this would not be possible through organic growth alone.

Poland is the only country in Central and Eastern Europe where it has not met its target of a 10 pct market share.

So far, its plans for Poland involve expanding its banking network there by adding 50 branches in 2006, 50 in 2007 and 20 in 2008.

Bergen said that while the bank has made attempts to make acquisitions, discussions with potential sellers have not resulted in anything.

Vast trade potential exists between Pakistan and Poland

remendous potential exists between Pakistan and Poland in the trade sector particularly in textiles and agriculture. Although the volume of trade between the two countries doubled in a year, it is not more than $ 100 million.

Ambassador of Poland Bogdan Marczewski stated this while talking to the media persons on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Solidarity Movement celebrated here.

The ambassador said that Poland could help Pakistan in the agriculture sector and get textile products in return. He said that his country could also provide heavy machinery involved in road and building construction.

He was optimistic that the two countries can have joint ventures in different fields.

The Polish envoy was much impressed by the Pakistani hospitality and evinced keen interest in tourism, and narrated how he once visited Hunza Valley. He was optimistic that in the near future he would go to Naran, Kaghan and other hilly areas in NWFP.

The ambassador said that Pakistan has vast mineral resources and labour was also cheap and opined that Poland could also assist Pakistan in coal mining and Railways.

Marczewski said that he visited Karachi Chambers of Commerce and Industry five times and signed several agreements, besides conducting conferences and seminars over there. He said that he was in contact with Lahore, Rawalpindi and Islamabad Chambers of Commerce and Industries and would like to increase cooperation with them.

He said that media had a greater role to play in promoting the image of Pakistan and was critical of the Western media, which was biased and “portrays only one side of the picture.”

He said that Pakistan was doing much on the anti-terror front and its policies were forward looking. Besides, it has a strategic location. “All the countries can benefit enormously from Pakistan as its people look into the future,” he added.

Earlier, in his address, the Polish ambassador gave a briefing on the historic movement of the Polish people for establishing legendary Independent Self-Governing Trade Union ‘Solidarity’ 25 years ago.

He said that the movement triggered changes, which led to the dismantling of the communist system.

“The abolition of the Berlin Wall, the Velvet Revolution in Prague, and the subsequent enlargement of the European eastward are all developments rooted in the ideals and achievements of Solidarity contributed to the expansion of the area of democracy and human rights across the world,” he observed.

He recalled that if their freedom leader Lech Walesa had not scaled the fence of the Gdansk Shipyard in August 1980 - the Berlin Wall would have long remained a mark of divided Europe.

Eurozet pledges to maintain its position on Poland’s ever-crowded airwaves

Eurozet, owner of radio broadcasters Radio Zet and Radiostacja, has quite cautious development plans.

"Our priority is maintaining the market position of Radio Zet, exploiting its brand and the development of Radiostacja," said Monika Bednarek, president of Eurozet. Radio Zet is the second most popular radio station in Poland after RMF FM, but each entity controls roughly 40% of the market. Many experts claim that both companies will find it hard to maintain a dominant position. "I expect the radio advertising market will grow by 7-10%, but our growth should be similar," said Monika Bednarek. She went on to say that in the mid-term the market should consolidate to around 2-3 players. Eurozet might consider spending up to zł.40 million to take over another broadcaster. "We would like to purchase stations owned by Agora or Eska, but they are not for sale," said Bednarek.
