Poland's airforce chief to stay

The Ministry of Defence has denied the rumours of the coming dismissal of chief of the Polish airforce general Stanisław Targosz.

The dismissal was to have followed disagreement between general Targosz and Defence Minister Radosław Sikorski over the method of training Polish F-16 pilots. Sources say that the President's Office refused to underwrite the dismissal.

Meanwhile the Polish government today was scheduled to discuss extending the mission of Polish troops to Iraq.

Defence Minister Radosław Sikorski has proposed that the troops remain in Iraq until the end of next year. The final decision of President Lech Kaczyński is expected in the course of this week.

Poland currently has 900 soldiers in Iraq. The 8th replacement contingent is to leave for Iraq in January.
