Poland: fruit and vegetable prices will rise

According to the Polish daily Rzeczpospolita, prices of all vegetables will rise during next couple of months, but no more than 3-5% on average. Higher increases are not possible due to the fact that vegetable wholesale prices were already high in 2006 (because of a 8% smaller harvest than in 2005) and further rises can lead to increased import. But there are exceptions – potatoes prices can rise as much as 50%, onion, carrot and parsley – about 30%.

According to experts, traders can also expect higher prices for apples in spring (in spite of a 11% larger domestic crop than in 2005) since at the beginning of 2007 a large amounts of apples has been exported from Poland to Russia, despite the embargo. The daily Rzeczpospospolita also reminds of VAT rate on agricultural products will rise in Poland from 3% to 7% on May 1 2007.
