Poland unemployment rate rises in Dec.

Poland's unemployment rate inched up to 14.9 in December, following several months of improvement, according to preliminary figures released by the Labor Ministry Friday.

Official statistics are expected in late January. However, those data seldom diverge by more than one-tenth of a percentage point from the preliminary Labor Ministry figures. November's rate was 14.8 percent.

Poland's unemployment rate has gradually declined since reaching a post-communist peak of 20.7 percent in February 2003. However, it still remains the highest in the expanded EU.
