Warsaw, Poland commuter rail system upgrade completed

The replacement of tracks in the Warsaw, Poland Centrum that has disrupted the commuter rail system in Poland's capital city for the whole of the year 2006 has been completed. Final inspections and tests are underway. Service will be restored to normal on Monday, December 18.

The replacement of the tracks took place at the same time then a bridge was being built on a major road into Warsaw. The road serves the same group of commuters. People coming in from the western side of Warsaw were in a difficult situation because buses and cars were tied up by the road construction and the commuter rail system that they could have used to bypass road construction was not operating normally.

What commuter trains that were available from the western parts of Warsaw directly to the Warsaw Centrum could not adequately serve the demand. Because it was often that people could not get onto the overloaded trains many people stopped attempting to use them.

An alternate system consisting of a train that stopped partway into Warsaw and allowed people to transfer to a bus did not prove popular at all because of the long distance that people had to walk between the train and the infrequent busses.

Warsaw has had a traffic problem that the Warsaw City Government has been in trying to solve. The combined work on the road and the commuter rail system only compounded the problem.

The restoration of the commuter rail system to full operation will immediately take a large load off the roads and commuter bus system. Perhaps the City may now be able to make some progress.
