Transport in Poland: Intermodal faces obstacles to development

Only around 10% of the containers handled at Poland's ports are transport to the ports by rail. The factors which continue to hamper the development of intermodal transport in Poland are high track access charges, the bad state of the rail infrastructure, and the lack of co-operation between transport operators in Poland.
In Poland, intermodal transport's share of the overall market does not exceed 2%, while in contrast, it stands at 14% in Germany and 7.3% in the Czech Republic. Although Poland had EUR 31.6mn (US$ 42.06mn) to spend on intermodal projects from the EU in 2003-2006, it did not manage to use the funds. It is thought that the funds could be carried over to 2005-2008, and some applications for EU funds for intermodal projects have been received by the Polish Transport Ministrty, the majority of which are for the extension of logistics centres and rail terminals.
