Poland ready to accept Russia talks if meat ban lifted

Tallinn - Poland is prepared to drop its strict opposition to EU negotiations on a treaty with Russia as long as Russia lifts its import ban on Polish meat imports, Poland's foreign minister Anna Fotyga said Friday.

'We can generously liberalize our expectations of the EU-Russia negotiations if the Russian side declares its willingness to lift its import ban on Polish meat products, at the latest 50 days after negotiations begin,' Fotyga said during her visit to the Estonian capital.

The EU dialogue with Moscow should be continued as soon as possible, and Poland is prepared to actively engage in the talks, Fotyga was quoted as saying by the Russian news service Itar-Tass.

Poland intends however to only approve a new basic treaty between the EU and Russia when the import ban has been lifted. Warsaw is also demanding that Russia ratify the EU energy charter.
