Warm December in Poland

The exceptional high temperatures - as in the beginning of December - worry farmers, especially fruit growers, in Poland. According to scientists, this year’s fall is the warmest in 227 years, since the weather measurements in Poland started. At the beginning of December, it was not difficult to find flowering daisies and dandelions in fields and orchards or see farmers spraying winter cereals against fungal diseases. The average daily temperature in the northern regions of Poland was above 10 degrees Celcius on December 6th.

Such conditions can cause a lot of losses in agriculture. Plants, specially fruit trees are not ready for winter yet. Warm weather disturbed their vegetation cycle – once the leaves have fallen off, the fruit trees sap juices should move to the roots. But this didn’t happen and the plants still continue to invest energy in vegetation instead of entering dormancy period.

What worries fruit growers is the fact, that trees are in bad condition after last year’s long cold winter and warm and dry summer. A sudden temperature drop can cause plants to die because of frost.
