Low apple prices in Poland

Polish fruit growers expected exceptionally high prices for table apples this year. But instead of going up, prices are decreasing. There is only one reason for this situation: the supply of apples surpasses the demand. Most fruit growers don’t have CA storage facilities, and fruit in regular storehouses loses its quality very fast because of the warm weather. So owners of such facilities have no other choice than to sell their fruit quickly. The average daily prices for apples at the Warsaw wholesale market on December 6th were: 0,31 €/kg for Gala and Jonagold, 0,44 €/g for Golden Delicious and – the highest – 0,49 €/kg for Ligol (relatively new Polish variety preferred by buyers). The average daily price for Conference pears was 0,92 €/kg.

Prices of vegetables are much higher than a year ago, especially onion (0,34 €/kg on December 6th 2006 in Warsaw wholesale market), root parsnip (0,52 €/kg) and potatoes (0,18 €/kg) are more than two times as expensive as in 2005. Because of high prices of Polish vegetables, there is a lot of imported produce on the market already. One kilogram of imported onions is only about 0,05 € more expensive than Polish ones, and imported cucumbers (1,18 €/kg) are already cheaper than cucumbers from Polish greenhouses (2,04 €/kg).
