Balcerowicz – ‘Euro in Poland’s best interest’

Outgoing National Bank President, Leszek Balcerowicz, has said Poland should enter the euro zone in order to make the best use of its EU membership.

Balcerowicz complained about inadequate information Poles are receiving on the benefits of adopting the common European currency.

They are also little informed about the lack of inflation in the euro zone and the fact that none of the countries which have introduced the common currency is seriously considering its withdrawal.

Professor Balcerowicz added that contrary to earlier speculations, none of these countries had lost any of their sovereignty as a result of the move.

The central bank head stressed that Poland has already fulfilled most of the Mastricht criteria for entering the euro zone. However, the biggest problem remains an excessive budget deficit.

Leszek Balcerowicz said he does not see the need for a national referendum on Poland’s accession to the euro zone. In his opinion, Poland had automatically taken such a decision years ago, through popular vote on entering the EU.
